Build a Career in the Building Industry with The Prosperity Christian Resource and Community Housing Development Center's, Painting Education Program

What is Painting?

Painting is a skill dating back thousands of years. Wherever there is a new home or office building built, or an apartment rented or complex renovated - painters are needed.

paint and wall coverings make surfaces clean and attractive.  In addition, paints and sealers protect outside walls from wear caused by weather. Although some people do both painting and paperhanging, each requires different skills.

Painters apply paint, stain, varnish, and other finishes. They choose the paint or finish for the surface to be covered, taking into account durability, ease of handling, method of application, and customers' wishes.

Paperhangers cover walls and ceilings with decorative wall coverings made of paper, vinyl, or fabric.

Another area is painting with "faux finishes" or treatments such as sponging, ragging, rolling, color washing or stenciling. These are more elaborate paint techniques requiring additional time to master.

What do you need to enroll in The Prosperity Christian Resource and Community Housing Development Center's, Painting Education Program?

• A commitment to get your GED or high school diploma, if you don't one.  Good math skills and reading are important to learning the trade's basics, operating tools and working safely.
• A commitment to get your driver's license if you don't have it. A license is as crucial as a pair of work boots-you need both to get to the job site.
• An eye for detail. Enjoy working with your hands. 
• The willingness to work off the ground and be around paint and stain.

What will you learn in The Prosperity Christian Resource and Community Housing Development Center's Painting  Education Program?

You will learn many of the skills employers in the building industry are looking for, including how to:

• Prepare surfaces, such as wood, drywall, plaster and masonry
• Know the difference between water-based and oil-based paint
• Work with airless and conventional spray systems
• Apply stains, finishes and wall coverings
• Sand and water blast surfaces

And that's only the beginning!

How long will it take to graduate?

That is up to you. In The Prosperity Christian Resource and Community Housing Development Center's, Painting Education Program you learn at your own pace. The average time of completion is 12 months. Students wishing to learn more technical skills take more time.

What type of job can you expect as a Painting Education Graduate?

As a Painting Education graduate, you will have the entry-level skills needed to embark on a career in the painting trade. You may want to start out with an apprenticeship in painting or a job as a paint helper.

There will be many job possibilities as your painting skills will be in demand by building management companies as well as painting general and rehab contractors.

What will be expected of you as a Student?

• A real desire to learn the trade and join one of the country's largest industries.
• Have the discipline to handle hands-on training responsibly and safely.
• Active participation in your training and its work-like requirements, including punctuality and good behavior.
• Respect for you instructors and fellow students at all times.
• To follow rules and respect the tools provided for your training.

How much can you earn?

Entry-level plumbing graduates, earn on average $8.00 to $10.00 an hour in their first job after graduation. 

Additional training through apprenticeships or on the job training will upgrade your skills and help expand your career options.

Your Painting Career Choice Ladder!
	As you expand your skills, so do your choices in the industry. Here is a ladder of different careers you can aim for as a Painting Education Graduate. Some careers require several years of experience in the trade, and in some cases further education.

Is Painting Education for you?

Painting is a rewarding career and very much in demand. The work can keep you physically active - bending, standing, climbing and kneeling are part of the job, which can be indoors or outdoors. There is lifting of heavy paint cans and buckets, and sometimes involves working on tall ladders and scaffolds.
