North Carolina Reads Program
The Prosperity Christian Resource and Community Housing Development Center, offers free individualized (one - on - one) tutoring and mentoring sessions for adult nonreaders. This program provides citizens with the extra help that they need, in a private setting, to learn the primary skills of reading and writing. The North Carolina Reads Program helps individuals build confidence and a positive "can do" attitude. The confidence that is created through the North Carolina Reads Program is critical to individuals who have set goals for themselves to improve their basic skills or to begin the process of "getting started" towards obtaining the knowledge that is required to complete their high school education, by obtaining a High School Equivalency (GED - General Educational Development) certificate. (Prosperity GED Classes) After individuals have "gotten over the hump" of confidence building and learning the primary skills of reading and writing, the next step of continuing education is to enroll in the Adult Basic Education Program. Adult Basic Education Program The center also offers Adult Basic Education (ABE). The purpose of this program is to help students build basic skills in reading, speech, writing, math, decision making, and critical thinking. This improvement in skills will help in performance of daily activities at home, work, or in the community. Family budgeting, banking, and job skills related to basic education are included in the program at student's requests. ABE is also the appropriate program for adult nonreaders and/or adult first time readers as a first step towards a High School Equivalency (GED) certificate.
